Root Canals

Root Canal Dentist Denver

Until approximately 20 years ago, a badly damaged tooth required extraction. Today there is a choice. Root canal treatment allows dentists to save more teeth than before.

Root canal therapy is most often a painless procedure, and sometimes it does not even require any anaesthetic at all. In some cases, discomfort can last up to one week following the procedure. Over the counter pain medication can usually solve this discomfort.

What is a Root Canal?

Root canal treatment is the treatment of problems areas in the tooth’s dental pulp or nerve, the soft core.

In the past, teeth with diseased or injured pulps were simply extracted. Today, root canal treatment has given dentists an alternative and safe method of saving teeth.

What is Dental Pulp?

Dental Pulp is the soft tissue that contains nerves, blood vessels and connective tissue in your tooth. It is positioned within the tooth and extends from the crown of the tooth to the bottom of the root in the jaw bone.

How does Pulp get damaged?

Deep cavities or a cracked tooth is the most common cause of pulp death. Both of these problems allow bacteria to enter the pulp area. When the pulp is diseased or injured and can’t repair itself, will die.

This bacteria develops into an infection inside the tooth. Untreated, the pus accumulates at the root tip in the jawbone forming an abscess or “pus-pocket”. An abscess can cause damage to the bone around the teeth, which is an additional problem.

Why is it necessary to remove the pulp?

If the infected pulp is not removed, severe pain and swelling develops, and the infection can further damage your jawbones. Without having infection removed, your tooth may have to be extracted completely.

What is involved with a root canal?

A root canal treatment is the removal of the diseased pulp. The pulp chamber and root canal(s) of the tooth are then cleaned and sealed.

Will the restored tooth last a long time?

The restored tooth could last a lifetime with proper care of your teeth and gums. Regular checkups of the tooth are necessary. If the tissues around the tooth nourish the root of a treated tooth, it will remain healthy.
