Tooth Colored Fillings

Tooth Fillings

Dental porcelains was developed to mimic a tooth’s enamel.

In the past, tooth fillings were filled with a mixture or amalgam of various metals such as silver. Today science has developed more natural-looking and metal-free fillings, such as composite resins and porcelains. These are now the preferred filling method.

Dentists are using more tooth-like materials (composite resins and porcelains) that are both safe and predictable. For the dental patient, the best feature is that they look and act more like natural teeth.

Tooth Filling Methods

Direct, semi-direct, or indirect are three different methods to repair teeth with restorative materials or fillings. Each method has its own advantages and disadvantages, and they are used depending on the specific scenario of each patient tooth problem.

Direct Fillings: these fillings use small amounts of resin materials being placed into cavities to repair decay. The resin is applied in layers and are instantly set with special lights. This enables the dentist to complete your filling in one visit.

Semi-Direct Fillings: these type of fillings are for repairing bigger areas. Layers of resin are used as in direct fillings, but this restoration can be removed and is set outside of the mouth. Once the filling has set, it is then bonded to the tooth. CAD/CAM (Computer Assisted Design/Computer Assisted Milling) can be used to create the inlays. This technology allows your dentist to make a harder, more durable porcelain restoration without sending out a mold be be produced at an external fabrication facility.

Indirect Fillings: these fillings are used on large or complex restoration cases. When there is not enough healthy tooth left to fill, a restoration is created to replace most of the visible tooth, or to crown it. These are more involved procedures and cannot be made directly to the tooth and cannot be placed the same day.

Tooth Components

parts of tooth

The Crown is the part of the tooth you see when you smile or open your mouth. It sits above your gumline.

Enamel is the external covering of a tooth, and is the hardest substance found in your body. Enamel protects the tooth from the wear and tear of chewing. There is no living tissue in the enamel.

Dentin is a yellow bone like material that makes up the inner portion of the tooth. Dentin consists of living tissue and is very sensitive. It is softer than enamel and has some of the nerve fibers that tell you when something is wrong inside the tooth. To mimic the natural dentin in the teeth, today’s dental composite resins are common in non-amalgam fillings. These composites are made of a plastic resin and silica filler.

Pulp is the center of the tooth and is a soft tissue that contains blood and lymph vessels, and nerve tissues. Nourishment to the tooth is delivered through the pulp, and transmits signals to the brain.

Cementum covers the majority a tooth’s root. It plays a part in attaching the tooth to the bones in your jaw. A cushioning layer called the Periodontal Ligament sits between the cementum and the jawbone. It helps to connect the two.
